Southern corn rootworms are a major pest to corn plants. Both the larvae and adults can cause severe plant and root damage. The larvae are slender and yellowish white with dark heads. Adult southern corn rootworm beetles are bright yellowish green with 12 black spots. Overwintering adult beetles emerge and mate in early spring. Each female will lay around 500 eggs in the soil where they will hatch. The larvae then feed on plant roots for a few weeks before pupating in the soil. Southern corn rootworms typically have 2 to 3 generations per year.
