The size of fire ants varies somewhat, and they are brown to red in color. Fire ants are extremely aggressive and bite and sting humans and animals. They live in large colonies and usually nest in the ground. They typically build their mounds in sunny, open areas. Fire ants are omnivores and will eat a wide variety of foods including seeds, insects, vegetation and even dead animals.
