Fungus gnats are very small, dark, winged insects that are commonly found in greenhouses and near potted plants. Adult fungus gnats are about 1/8” long and have thin legs and long antennae. The fungus gnat life cycle includes 4 stages; egg, larva, pupa and adult and is typically completed between 2 and 3 weeks depending on temperature. A female adult can lay about 200 eggs in her short 10 day life!  The eggs hatch within a week into small transparent larvae with characteristic black heads that feed in the top three inches of soil. Fungus gnats prefer moist conditions, so avoiding over-watered plants can help to prevent a fungus gnat infestation. Adult fungus gnats spread plant diseases while the larvae feed on plant roots.
