Diaprepes abbreviatus
Large, striped weevils whose larvae eat and girdle the roots of citrus trees, opening wounds for root rot.
Diaprepes root weevils are large weevils, black with orange-yellow stripes down the wing covers. They're a pest of citrus and many ornamental plants in Florida.
The adults lay eggs between leaves. The larvae drop to the ground, burrow into the soil, and feed on roots for months.
The larvae groove and girdle the large roots of citrus trees. The wounds let in Phytophthora root rot, which can kill the tree. Young trees can decline quickly.
The beneficial nematodes in BioLogic's products hunt weevil larvae in the soil, where most other controls can't reach them. The larvae live in the soil for a long time, so more than one application a year may be needed.
Treat with Ecomask from mid-July through September, when the soil is above 70°F and moist.
Apply to moist soil under the tree canopy, and water it in well afterward.
