Ctenocephalides felis (cat flea)
Tiny, wingless, blood-sucking jumpers that bother pets and people. The adults you see are only a small part of the problem; most of the population is eggs, larvae, and pupae in your yard.
Fleas are wingless insects about 1/16 to 1/6 inch long. They are parasites that suck blood from many kinds of animals. There are many types of fleas, but the most common is the cat flea, which also bites dogs and people. Fleas have long, powerful back legs and are incredible jumpers.
Adult fleas make up only about 5% of the flea population, so if you're seeing adult fleas, you usually have a much bigger problem to treat. A female flea lays hundreds of eggs in her short life. The eggs usually fall off the animal within minutes, then develop into larvae and pupae before coming out as adult fleas.
Flea bites can be sore and itchy, and are a real nuisance for pets and people. Fleas can also spread many diseases.
The beneficial nematodes in BioLogic's products hunt down and kill flea larvae and pupae in the soil. Killing the fleas at these stages stops the life cycle, so new adults don't emerge.
Ecomask is our preferred product for fleas, but Scanmask also works. Apply it with the Nema-Jet Sprayer, a hose-end sprayer, or a watering can for small areas.
Focus on the parts of your yard your pets use most. Fleas prefer shade, so concentrate on shady areas, near buildings and structures, and under decks and porches.
You can apply anytime the soil isn't frozen, and you should see fewer fleas in about 2 weeks. One application typically lasts about a year, and often longer. Treat again when you see the fleas coming back.
