What it looks like

Mole crickets are light brown, velvety insects with large, shovel-like front legs for digging. They're a pest of warm-season grass, mostly Bermuda grass, on sandy soil in the southeastern United States.

They spend their lives in tunnels in the soil, coming up at night to feed.

Damage

Mole crickets tunnel just under the surface, uprooting the grass and leaving the turf soft and spongy, as if it had been tilled. The grass thins out, and birds and animals dig for the crickets. Damage usually starts in mid to late summer and gets worse into fall.

How nematodes help

The beneficial nematodes in BioLogic's products hunt insects in the soil. Mole crickets are hard to control because they live deep in tunnels, so results with nematodes vary.

How to apply

Treat with Ecomask anytime the soil is not frozen. Scanmask also works.

Focus on areas of lawn with tunnels or damage, especially in sandy soil.
